If a home has frozen pipes from cold weather and end up bursting, the damage that is caused will be covered by home insurance. However, it is much smarter to take the necessary steps to avoid these pipes from freezing that way you don’t need to file a claim. Home insurance is there for you when you need it, but filing claims will cause rates to go up. At Thompson Insurance we want to inform you of every way to keep your rates as low as possible.
Frozen pipes prevent the water flow, but even worse they can cause the pipe to burst, which can cause damage and even flooding. Here are some steps you can take to keep your pipes from bursting when the temperature drops.
Allow the faucet to drip. As slight drip in the faucet can go a long way in preventing pipes from freezing. If a pipe freezes, it is the pressure between the blockage and the faucet that will cause the pipe to burst. Allowing the pipe to drip will keep this pressure from building up.
Keep your heat on. This is probably the most obvious answer. Some home owners are used to turning the heat or air off to keep utility bills down when they leave the home. This is not a good practice when temperatures are below freezing outside. The financial burden that can come from a pipe bursting is greater than the utility bill being a few dollars higher this month.
Keep cabinet doors open. Pipes are located in cabinets. When temperatures drop, it is smart to keep these cabinet doors open to allow the heat to directly reach the pipes. It is also a good idea to keep all interior doors open, so that heat can flow freely throughout the house.
Seal up cracks and holes. You should use caulk to seal up any cracks and holes in your pipes. This will keep the cold air out and the warm air in.
Add extra insulation. This is very common in basements and attics. There is a chance you have pipes in basement and attics where there is not sufficient insulation. If you do have a pipe burst, you should add insulation to that area once the pipes are repaired.
